Many people take the AC system in their vehicle for granted and never give it a second thought until it starts to fail. At that point, most people start looking for mechanics to repair the unit, not realizing that the problem could have been avoided.
In many cases, AC systems do not just suddenly stop working. There are usually signs you need to keep an eye on to resolve minor issues right away. That way, you can quickly send your car to a mechanic to find the root of the problem and eliminate it. That also means that you will not have to deal with the unfortunate situation of driving in a hot car.
With that being said, here are four signs that something is wrong with your car's AC system.
1. The AC is making strange sounds
Your AC should make barely any sound (unless you put it to its maximum fan speed). If you hear something out of the ordinary, it is highly likely that something is wrong with it, specifically with the compressor. However, there are many other causes of strange noises, such as using the wrong lubricant or a broken component in the system.
2. The refrigerant is leaking
While it is normal for your AC system to slowly lose its refrigerant over time, it is not normal to find it leaking out of your vehicle. The refrigerant is harmful to the car and also even to the environment.
3. The air coming out smells bad
There should not be any bad or foul smell coming out of your AC. It should be cool and refreshing. If something does not play well with your nose, then it is highly likely that something is growing in your AC system. Things like fungus and bacteria can grow inside the unit and emit a foul smell. If left unchecked, the problem will only worsen and even put the health of those in your vehicle at risk.
4. The air feels moist
Sometimes, you might mistake moist air for cool air since the cold naturally condenses some water and gives it a similar sensation. However, if you find that your car's interior is consistently moist, and you can see your window condensing from the inside regularly, moisture might be trapped inside the AC system. This is not a good sign, as excess humidity forces the system to work harder.
If you see any of these signs occurring with your car's air-conditioning system, know that there is a problem you need to address quickly. Otherwise, the problem will only get worse, hurting your driving experience and forcing you to pay more to fix the problem.
With that being said, the most obvious sign that there is something wrong with the AC is that air coming out of it is not cold enough, regardless of how low the temperature is set. This can be caused by several things, from a drop in refrigerant level to a damaged compressor.
In any case, if you feel that there is a problem with your car's AC, it never hurts to have it checked out by a professional.
